The actual cause
Somewhere after forty, skin begins producing a compound called 2-nonenal. It is an oil. Soap is built to lift water-soluble dirt, and it runs straight over an oil the way water runs over a greasy pan.
That is the whole reason a second shower changes nothing. You are washing correctly. You are washing the wrong thing.
Kakishibu — persimmon tannin, fermented — binds to that oil instead of sliding past it. It is why this fruit has been used on cloth and skin in Japan for centuries, long before anyone had a name for the compound.
Olfactory adaptation. Your nose filters out any constant background smell within minutes so it can stay alert to new ones. Everyone else walks into it fresh.
Both. The compound appears in roughly the same way regardless of sex, and its concentration climbs with age rather than with anything you do or fail to do.
Why so few make it properly
Persimmon soap got popular and the shortcuts arrived: bright orange bars, persimmon fragrance, two for ten dollars. They smell like the fruit. They do nothing that the fruit does.
Unripe persimmons are picked in a two-week window. Miss it and there is no second pressing.
The crushed fruit ferments through the cold months. This is the step the copies skip.
The liquid goes into a glycerin base with shea and olive. Nothing is added to make it smell of fruit.
Four weeks on open racks, then cut by hand. Roughly 2,400 bars come out of one harvest.
Almost nobody reports a new smell. They report the absence of one.
Four ingredients
Persimmon is aggressive. On its own it pulls the smell off and leaves skin tight and itching — which is exactly what cheap persimmon bars do. The other three are not filler.
Fermented kakishibu
Binds the compound instead of sliding past it
Shea butter
Settles skin that has thinned with age
Olive fruit oil
Puts back what the tannin takes
Glycerin
Holds the water in rather than on
Wash with it for sixty days. If you don't notice the difference — and more to the point, if the people around you don't — write to us and we return every cent. No form to fill in, nothing to post back, no questions designed to wear you down.
Everything else
Almost nothing — faintly earthy, closer to wet stone than to fruit. That is deliberate. A bar that covers one smell with another is the problem wearing a different coat.
Yes, and roughly half the harvest goes to men. The compound does not care, and neither does the bar.
It is made for skin that has grown thinner and drier, which is why three of the four ingredients are there to protect it. If you react easily, patch test on the inside of your elbow for 24 hours first.
Chest, back, neck and behind the ears — where the compound concentrates. There is no benefit to using it head to toe, and the bar lasts far longer if you don't.
Email us inside sixty days and we refund in full. Keep the bars; posting soap back helps nobody.
Dispatched within one business day. Two to four working days in the continental US, five to nine elsewhere. Tracking as soon as it leaves.
Yes, every year. One harvest means a fixed number of bars. When the 2025 pressing is gone we reopen after the next autumn.
